I attended #langchat on Twitter the other night and we were sharing about our favorite interpretive activities and I realized – Ah! I’ve never shared about one of my favorite ways to combine resources to make a quick lesson plan or activity for my students. It’s super simple and so wonderful, so I knew I had to write up a quick post!
Meet the pieces:
The Novice Listening Library from SraSpanglish
I’ve shared about the novice listening library from Laura before (click here to read that post), but I still think it’s just a magical idea. Basically, the idea here is that Spanish teachers have built (are building) a library of videos that are comprehensible for novice students, on common novice themes. For step one of this activity combo, visit the library and pick out a video or two (or three, depending on length) for your students to listen to.
The novice library is fantastic (and I know I’d love it if you’d add to it so it can continue to grow!!), but if you can’t find a video there that works, Dreaming Spanish is usually my second stop!
Make sure to check out Laura’s page for more amazing ideas from her!
Interpretive Quick Quizzes for distance learning from Señora Chase
The second piece of this activity is to combine the video(s) you’ve chosen from the library with an interpretive quick quiz from Señora Chase! Basically, it’s a short assessment to see what students understand from a reading or listening activity, but the questions are worded in such a way that you can just re-use them over and over again. ✨Magical.✨ (Here’s her original post with more info about how she used them pre-distance learning).
In March of last year, she shared this update to her quick quizzes with a Google Form version, as well as very helpful step by step tutorials for how to use them! Click here to see the Google Form version of her quizzes!
How does it work?
Post the link to the video or videos you’ve chosen in the Google Form quick quiz that’s appropriate to their level, then share it via your school’s LMS (G.Classroom, Canva, Schoology, etc). Et voila!
Simple? Yes. Effective? Also yes. Both things are great if you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or aren’t sure what to plan for tomorrow!
