I know many of us plan units around a topic, theme, or studying a particular country so today I wanted to share with you a few resources to teach about Bolivia in your classroom! As always, I’d recommend checking these before showing them to your students. Just because it’s a good fit for one classroom doesn’t mean it’s a perfect fit everywhere! I’ve also tried to list where they can be found now, but we know the internet is always changing on us, so hopefully if they’re not on that host any longer it might be found through a quick Google!

Explore the Wiphala and the Power of Symbols

If you are looking to build cultural awareness in a quick but meaningful way, the Wiphala flag is a beautiful conversation starter. This brightly colored checkered flag is a symbol of Indigenous identity across the Andes, including in Bolivia. Each color represents an idea land, people, time, energy, and more and it is deeply tied to Aymara culture.

Introduce it with a simple image and ask your students what they think each color might represent. Then dive into a reading or video that explains the real meaning behind the design. You could even have them create their own personal Wiphalas using markers or digital tools and present their color choices in Spanish. It is a great way to tie in vocabulary and self-expression while giving students a lens into Indigenous pride and resistance.

Bring the Andes to Life with Food, Folklore, and Fun

One of the easiest ways to spark curiosity is through food. And Bolivia brings flavor. Teach your students about salteñas, api morado, or pique macho through visuals, videos, or short recipe readings in Spanish. They can label ingredients, compare meals across regions, or create a pretend menu from a Bolivian restaurant.

Want to make it even more interactive? Set up stations featuring traditional elements of Andean life. One could be music from the charango, another a reading station about llamas and alpacas, and another a game or activity tied to Bolivian folklore. You can rotate students in groups and keep it light but rich in content.

This kind of learning sticks. It connects language to real-life culture, and it gives your students something they’ll remember long after the test is over.
