I know many of us plan units around a topic, theme, or studying a particular country so today I wanted to share with you a few resources to teach about Dominican Republic in your classroom! Just a quick note, there are so many amazing options out there, I tried to gather as many as I could, but if there’s something I’m missing, please feel free to drop a comment to help other teachers as they are planning!

Readers Based in Dominican Republic
I found these recommended in a Facebook group for Spanish teachers. It’s always a good idea to preview a book before adding it to your library with your specific classroom and learners in mind!
Websites and Video Resources to Teach about Dominican Republic
As always, I’d recommend checking these before showing them to your students. Just because it’s a good fit for one classroom doesn’t mean it’s a perfect fit everywhere! I’ve also tried to list where they can be found now, but we know the internet is always changing on us, so hopefully if they’re not on that host any longer it might be found through a quick Google!
These are great to have bookmarked as you build your unit. I like mixing in one or two short videos across the week to keep things fresh and student-friendly. If you’re collecting your own resources to teach about Dominican Republic, these can be a solid place to start.

- La Ross Maria – Mi Plan Contigo Youtube
- Covi Quintana – Soy Dominicana Youtube
- Choice Board – Shared by Rebecca Jill
- Bachata resources from Fluency Fast
- Dominoes (some language, but it’s short and fast!)
- In the Heights (streaming moves around)
- Geoguessr Game
Additional Resources
Here’s a few more resources you could use in your unit(s) on Dominican Republic!

Easy Cultural Touchpoints to Add Throughout Your Unit
If you’re teaching about the Dominican Republic and looking for ways to make the culture feel real for your students, here are a few easy things you can add to what you’re already doing. These don’t need to be full lessons. Just quick ideas that work with the time you have.
Play a short clip of bachata or merengue as students walk in or during transitions. You can use it as a background opener or turn it into a mini listening activity. Ask them to jot down what instruments they hear or simply respond with how it makes them feel. It’s quick, but it builds a cultural connection.
You can also show a few photos of typical Dominican foods like mangú, tostones, or sancocho. Students can describe what they see, vote on what they’d like to try, or practice using food vocabulary in simple sentences. It works well as a warm-up or an exit ticket.
Baseball is another great hook. Choose a well-known Dominican MLB player and have students read a short bio, then write two or three facts in Spanish. Or let them pick their own player and make a simple profile. This is especially fun during baseball season and gives them an anchor to remember the country.
Wrap-Up Activity Idea
A small one-pager or brochure is a nice way to close out the unit. Students can include basic facts, something they found interesting, and one cultural piece that stood out to them. Keep it simple. Give them a few examples and let them take ownership. It doesn’t need to be fancy to be effective.
