Resources to Teach about Peru

I know many of us plan units around a topic, theme, or studying a particular country so today I wanted to share with you a few resources to teach about Peru in your classroom! Just a quick note, there are so many amazing options out there, I tried to gather as many as I could, but if there’s something I’m missing, please feel free to drop a comment to help other teachers as they are planning!

Just a head’s up – I haven’t read all of these, but I have read books by some of these authors that have been amazing!! The ones I have not read myself I found recommended in a Spanish teachers’ group online, from others who have used them. It’s always a good idea to preview a book before adding it to your library with your specific classroom and learners in mind!

Websites and Video Resources to Teach about Peru

As always, I’d recommend checking these before showing them to your students. Just because it’s a good fit for one classroom doesn’t mean it’s a perfect fit everywhere! I’ve also tried to list where they can be found now, but we know the internet is always changing on us, so hopefully if they’re not on that host any longer it might be found through a quick Google!

Bring the Andes to Life with Music, Dance, and Art

Nothing captures student interest quite like music and movement. Peru is home to some of the most vibrant cultural traditions, and incorporating these into your classroom is a total win. Try adding a mini music session featuring traditional Andean instruments like the zampoña and charango. You don’t even need the real instruments. YouTube has fantastic demos that bring the sounds of the Andes right to your students’ ears. One gem is the video “Música andina para niños.” It’s short, upbeat, and classroom-friendly.

Follow it up with a quick art activity like creating their own retablos peruanos (those gorgeous little diorama boxes). Kids can craft them using shoeboxes, paper scraps, and plenty of imagination. It’s creative, low prep, and gives them a hands-on way to connect with Peruvian folk art.

Classroom-Friendly Fun with Peruvian Cuisine

What’s a unit on Peru without diving into the food? While cooking might not be an option in every classroom, there are still easy ways to explore the sazón peruano with your students. One idea is to have students research popular dishes like lomo saltado, ají de gallina, or ceviche, then create simple recipe posters in Spanish. Pair this with a listening activity like a short cooking video. There’s a cute one called “Recetas fáciles peruanas para niños” on YouTube, and it makes for a tasty little project that builds vocabulary and cultural awareness.

Want to go bigger? Host a “Peru Food Day” where students present their posters and you bring in a snack like Inca Kola or plantain chips. Just be sure to check for allergies and school rules. It’s a fun way to wrap up the unit and get everyone excited about what they’ve learned.
