How I Actually Use Spanish Language Podcasts with My Classes

I’ve tried so many listening tools over the years, but nothing sticks quite like podcasts. The trick is to keep it simple and low-stress, both for me and my students. I usually pick from my list of the best Spanish language podcasts, but I choose ones that match the vibe or level of my class that week. A short, clear clip with a good voice is gold.

Sometimes I just play it during our settle-in time. The goal isn’t always comprehension right away. It’s about getting used to hearing Spanish that’s not from a textbook. If there’s a transcript, I might pull a few lines to go over later. We might chat about one word or phrase that stood out. Easy.

Advanced level Spanish language podcasts

For more advanced students, I recommend referring to the list of best Spanish language podcasts at the beginning of this post! Those recommendations came from teachers about their favorite podcasts to listen to, so they are mainly more advanced levels.

Tips for maximizing your practice with Spanish language podcasts

To make the most of your Spanish language podcast experience, consider the following tips:

  • Consistency is key: Commit to listening to Spanish language podcasts regularly, even if it’s for short periods of time.
  • Engage actively: Don’t just passively listen to the podcasts; actively engage with the content. Try to follow along, repeat phrases, and even pause the podcast to practice speaking or jot down new vocabulary words. This active participation will enhance your learning experience.
  • Vary your podcast selection: Explore a diverse range of Spanish language podcast genres and topics to keep your learning journey interesting and engaging. This will expose you to different accents, vocabulary, and conversational styles, broadening your understanding of the language.
  • Utilize supplementary resources: Complement your podcast learning with other resources, and check the show notes for transcripts and other resources to help you.
  • Embrace mistakes: Don’t be discouraged by mistakes or moments of confusion. Embrace them as opportunities to learn and grow. Use the podcast episodes as a safe space to practice and improve your Spanish without the pressure of real-time conversations.

Listening Activities to use with Podcast Episodes

If you’re planning on using any of these podcasts with your classes, I’d like to share some listening activities with you!

  1. Chunky Monkey (Señor Wooly) order lyric chunks chronologically while listening to song. Do this with a podcast by using a provided transcript, or write selections yourself.
  2. Creat an Edpuzzle – watch videos and answer questions as added by the teacher
  3. Interpretive quick quizzes (Señora Chase) – students listen to the media and then respond as much as they are able
  4. Letra Equivocada (Spanish Plans) give students lyrics, but some of them are wrong – they listen and mark when they hear something that doesn’t match. Apply this to podcast episodes by utilizing a transcript with details shifted.
  5. Marker Partner (Cynthia Hitz) team version of the “agárralo/marker” game
  6. Off-Side (Señor Wooly) students show agreement to 1 of 2 statements by moving to corresponding side of the room
  7. Pareja Mentirosa in pairs, students take turns to read out loud. When they make a mistake the other partner calls out “Mentirosa”
  8. Picture Talk talk about an image in comprehensible language for your students
  9. Pop Up (Señora Chase) listen to a sentence, pop up when called to translate it first
  10. Sound Effect Reading (Julie Ogden Thompson) students make sound effects as you listen to the episode as a class.
  11. Strip Bingo (Comprehensible Classroom) students listen and tear off pieces from a strip of paper
  12. Viva la Música (Señor Wooly) students listen and highlight known phrases – again utilize a transcript!

Small Wins from a Good Podcast Moment

One of my favorite things is when a student mentions a podcast we listened to weeks ago, like, they remembered a detail or a phrase and actually used it. That’s the kind of language win I’m always looking for.

To mix things up, I’ve had them pick a podcast from our “best Spanish language podcasts” list and create a mini project: maybe a visual summary, a few comprehension questions, or even their own short “episode” with a partner.

If I’m being honest, I’m not doing this every week. But when I can work a podcast in, it almost always leads to a richer conversation, sometimes about culture, sometimes about grammar, but almost always something meaningful. And that’s why I keep coming back to this format. It’s flexible, engaging, and doesn’t require a full-blown prep session.
