Question Words in Spanish PDF Posters

You already know that visual supports and scaffolding are so important for student success! In fact, having a word wall with the question words is one of the two must have displays in your Spanish classroom.

When you have the question words in Spanish displayed on your walls, your students can use them as a visual reference while you are asking them questions. Any time you circle with your students, story telling, movie talk – even during your start of class routine!

As you’re asking your students questions, walk over to the posters on the wall, point to the word and the English as you ask your question. Students will start to master these as you make use of them over and over throughout the year!

This question words in Spanish activity is a little bit silly, but it works! I learned it from a co-worker and we use it for a warm up or a brain break with your students. It’s catchy for sure!

Question Words in Spanish Worksheet

Scrambled Sentences are one of my favorite activities, and they are especially great for question words in Spanish as they work on word order. Scrambled sentences are also a great way to get your students thinking and talking about the language collaboratively! Groups or partners work together to reassembled the scrambled sentence while working on the targeted structures.

This review game and activity is so fun! Here’s how to play and set it up:

1. Print off the pages in this file. There is a Matamoscas board, questions to sort, question words to use for the category, and a student recording sheet. 
2. Make enough copies to have your students work in groups of 2-4.
3. Cut the Interrogatives Sort pages apart, except for the student recording sheet and Matamoscas board.

Tip: In order to keep everything organized, I glued the Matamoscas board onto the front of a manila envelope and then put all of the answers and question words inside of it. This made pick up and distribution very quick and simple!

4. Begin with the Interrogatives Matamoscas round in the Google Slides. The slide shows an answer and the students race to touch the correct question word first. I do this in groups of 3-4. 

5. After a few rounds of Matamoscas, introduce the sorting activity using the last slide of the Powerpoint file. This is where it’s handy to keep the pieces in the manila envelope- when you’re done explaining, students open the envelope and get started!
6. As groups finish, check their work and make sure things are sorted correctly. Then, on a sheet of paper, each student will need to write 1 question that could match with one of the answers for each of the question words, and record the corresponding answer, so 8 questions and answers total. You can either print of the student response sheet or have them just do this on a piece of notebook paper.

Make Visuals Your Best Friend with Question Words in Spanish

If your students are just starting their journey with question words in Spanish, it’s all about giving them visuals and repetition. That’s why I recommend a bulletin board of posters featuring qué, cuándo, dónde, quién, por qué, and cómo. Pick a fun theme like succulents or llamas to make it pop. When you point to the word and ask a question, they’ll be connecting Spanish to meaning with ease. Soon enough they’ll be using question words in Spanish naturally, without prompting!

Silly Song & Scrambled Fun for Retention

Songs are magic for memory, so we’ve created a goofy question words in Spanish tune that students love to belt out. It’s great for warm ups or even brain breaks. Pair that with scrambled sentences featuring question words in Spanish, and your students get to build and reconstruct. Working in partners or small groups, they’ll chat through the sentences, correct each other, and have fun negotiating word order. It’s collaborative and effective.

Interactive Game: Matamoscas with a Twist

Want a game that brings energy to the room? Try the Matamoscas (flyswatter) round with question words in Spanish. Print the Matamoscas board and question word tiles, and let groups race to tap the correct word on the board. Then, introduce sorting, students match question words with sample answers. After matching, each student crafts their own question using the correct word and pairs it with an answer. For example, ¿Dónde vive tu abuela? Vive en la ciudad. They love making their own!
