Holidays Around the World Lesson Plan for Spanish Class: The Video

Background Info:

I have used this lesson with 6th-12th grade students, in exploratory, Spanish 1, and Spanish 2 classes. I have never tried a virtual field trip with elementary students, but if you teach upper elementary and have students who are very comfortable with technology, you might try it with your upper el ed students. This fit well in a 45-50 minute class period, but if your classes are much longer, you might like this plan instead!

Fast Finisher Options

As students finish the virtual field trip at their own pace, it’s nice to have a fast finisher. Check out these options:

Bring Cinco de Mayo to Life with Interactive Stations

Let’s turn your Cinco de Mayo lesson into something your students will talk about long after the bell rings. Try setting up a few cultural stations around the classroom. It’s an easy way to get everyone moving, exploring, and learning in small groups. You might include a reading corner about the Battle of Puebla, a quick vocab puzzle, or even a piñata sketch challenge that brings out everyone’s creative side.

One favorite station is the music stop. Just queue up a mariachi performance or traditional folk dance video and let students react with a few sentence starters. You’ll be surprised how many connections they make. These little stations take hardly any prep but add a lot of variety and energy to your lesson. And the best part? You get to float between groups and join in on the fun while they learn.
Make It Personal with a Quick Reflection

Once your students finish the field trip or stations, give them a few minutes to reflect. Nothing too serious—just a short write-up or video response answering a fun or thoughtful prompt. You could ask what they learned, what surprised them most, or what they’d like to explore more. One great question is “Why do people mix up Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day?”

This part helps your Cinco de Mayo lesson plan feel more meaningful, and it gives your students a voice. Whether they’re writing in Spanish or English, you’re giving them space to connect with the culture behind the celebration.

If you’ve got fast finishers, keep the energy going with a quick round of GeoGuessr or a printable reading activity.

This small touch of reflection and choice makes a big difference in engagement. It turns a holiday lesson into something personal and memorable.
