Virtual Field Trip FAQs:
What do they need?
Students need access to Google My Maps and Youtube on their devices. Some teachers prefer if their students use headphones when watching the videos.
How long does it take?
This depends a bit on your students’ comfort level with technology, as well as their ability and the language you choose to complete the map. I usually use these in one 45-50 minute class period.
Can elementary students use these?
I’ve never taught elementary, so these aren’t designed for them. I would say that upper elementary could navigate them if they are comfortable with tech, but I’d recommend watching the videos first, just to make sure they’re appropriate for your younger classes.

This was my first time assigning a webquest activity, and it was a great success! Although you h we were holding in-person classes, I had a lot of students absent due to sports, etc and they were easily able to complete the activity as I posted it in google classroom. Thanks for those step by step instructions!! Quite a few of my students preferred to fill the worksheet out by hand while using their screen to access the webquest links, so I was grateful to have that as a built-in option for them. Very pleased with this product and i hope to order another webquest for a different cultural topic next year.
Madame Potter –
I started using this resource with my Spanish students the week of Cinco de Mayo…then I got COVID. I was able to use this in conjunction with the sub covering my classes to keep them interested and engaged (as much as you can with 7th graders in the spring) and I felt like I was leaving them meaningful lessons instead of having the sub throw a movie in.

Kayty R. –
I LOVE these activities–the only problem is YouTube is blocked on . my kids’ chromebooks so I have to show the videos for them, which defeats the independent part of it. Anybody found any way around this?
Ashley Mikkelsen –
Oh, Kayty I’m so sorry to hear that! It sounds like a district decision. Is it possible to talk with your tech team about shifting that policy? Our district blocks all videos except for ones the teachers have approved and “opened” ahead of time for the students! That might be something to consider with your tech team!
