I am Thankful Turkey Printable

This printable “I am Thankful” Turkey comes in Spanish and English, as a printable color and write sheet, and as a craft! You can pick and choose the right option for your classes. Here’s everything that’s included in your pdf file download:

Let’s look a bit closer at how you can use this as a lesson plan in your classes!

Materials Needed

For this cute Thanksgiving craft and writing, you’ll need just a few materials. Of course, this will depend on which version of the activity you choose, but I’ll list the basics:

• I am thankful turkey body and turkey feathers copied onto white paper (regular paper is fine!)
• scissors
• coloring supplies of your choice
• liquid glue or glue stick

If you’d like to copy the turkey templates onto white cardstock paper or construction paper for a more robust turkey you certainly can, but I’ve had no problem just using the printable page on regular computer paper for students!

Lesson Plans

Lesson plan overview:

• Start of class routine
• Daily Routine
• Brainstorm different ways to say what they’re thankful for
• Pass out copies of the feather page and body of the turkey or the print and go (no scissors or glue) version
• Students write what they’re thankful for and record their name on the cute thankful turkey
• Students color, cut, and assemble the fun Thanksgiving craft
• Hang up the crafts to decorate your classroom

You can use this simple craft with students of all ages this Thanksgiving season. No matter their skill level, students can decorate the turkey’s feathers with different things they are thankful for. With younger kids or a lower level of Spanish, it can help to brainstorm first!

Remember output expectations will change with the levels, but with level 1 I like to brainstorm nouns, short phrases, and infinitives. This might include:

• family members
• activities they like to do
• things they like to eat
• friends

They can certainly include more than that! As you’re brainstorming, encourage them to share and build your list on the whiteboard as a perfect way to set them up for success before they start working on their writing and easy craft.

For more advanced students, I usually skip the brainstorming step as they don’t need as much help front loading that vocabulary. I encourage them to fill each feather with more than just a word or phrase, and instead encourage them to work on adding complete sentences or even short paragraphs. That simple shift is an easy way to use this fun craft with multiple levels.

Next you’ll pass out copies of their little turkey and feathers. Remind them where to find the coloring supplies, glue, and scissors, and let them get to work on this cute turkey craft! While they are working, I circulate and chat with them about different ways to express gratitude and what they’ve written on their turkey’s feathers. It’s a fun activity to get to see what the students say, and a great opportunity to get to know them just a little bit better. I encourage them to use different colors on their feathers and be creative!

As they finish, I make sure to remind them to put their name on their turkey, just in case. It doesn’t seem to matter how old they are, kids of all ages need a little help with that step! 

Finally, if I have a bulletin board ready for them, I’ll give them the stapler or tape (depending on their age, of course), and let them add their thankful craft to a bulletin board or the classroom door.
