Description
This scavenger hunt reading activity is an engaging gallery walk activity that incorporates reading comprehension, Spanish travel vocabulary knowledge, citing text evidence and critical thinking skills. It also includes an escape room style challenge of a final mystery word to solve the riddle, encouraging your students to finish the task.
First, read the scenario with your students. I’ve included some comprehension questions as well for you to check for understanding. Then, pass out the student instruction sheets!
Students will hunt for code words in the reading passages. Just print the 10 reading passage cards, cut them in half, and hang or hide them!
Students will revisit the short story about Carlos’s first time through the airport multiple times practicing reading comprehension skills as they rotate around the room seeking the correct answer to the code word questions.
To ensure understanding of the subject matter, students will answer questions that MUST be found directly in the reading passages.
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
✏️ 10 Reading Passages in Spanish written in the past tense
✏️ 10 Question Trails in Spanish and English so you can choose which you prefer for your students
✏️ Student Recording Sheets for each question trail
✏️ Student Directions
✏️ Teacher Directions
✏️ Teacher Answer Key
✏️ 4 Extension Activities for additional re-reading and vocab practice
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
- “Pick One” – students choose a prompt and complete a writing activity
- “Explain the Pic” – students look at a picture and explain how it is related to the story
- “Find, define, use, illustrate” – students choose 5 words from the passage to define, use in a sentence, and illustrate
- “Pick 10, Then Pick 6” – students find 10 vocabulary words related to your unit in the reading passages. Then, they choose 6 of those vocab words to illustrate
This fun lesson includes a scenario reading to set up the problem they’re solving with the hunt, 10 short reading passages, a question trail and a final mystery word. Each card reveals a new code word. The correct code words are not only found on a different card but also must be found IN the reading passage.
Students must follow the trail in the correct order to determine the final code word (and answer to the riddle!).
If you choose to use this toward the end of the unit, students will likely be too familiar with the vocabulary and complete it very quickly. I recommend using this at the start of your unit when they’re learning the vocabulary.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Students choose a reading card to start at and may start at ANY card. They read the passage and look at the question at the bottom labeled “code word”. The code word for THAT card number will lead them to a different card. Students will NOT know where to find the answer so they will have to visit, skim, browse and revisit the clue cards and reading passages several times to find the answer and code word they are looking for. This is a great activity to have them read and re-read in Spanish!
You can hang the cards on the wall, in the hallway, scatter them on the floor, place them on desks, hide them or use as stations. How you choose to set it up in your classroom is up to you!
Students can work in pairs (or individually) and race to complete 10 questions, secret words and final answer to the riddle. A friendly competition always increases engagement.
