These short readings are a great way for your students to get lots of input! This resource includes 18 short readings about pets written in comprehensible language. The readings include vocabulary supports at the bottom of the page to help your students be successful. The readings are a basic description of each person’s pet, their characteristics, and other info about the animal!

This resource includes a scavenger hunt activity in Spanish and English for students to complete. Hang the readings around the room and let them walk and read, practicing their comprehension skills! It also includes a vocabulary activity that has students describe the animals and what they like, as well as a writing activity for them to describe and draw their ideal pet.

    I’ve used this resource several times now and really like it. The stories are comprehensible and interesting even early on in Spanish 1. The students really liked reading about all the different animals.

    Here’s how I used this resource:

    Day 1: I posted the reading around the classroom. With a partner, students completed the Data Sheet (we did one reading together as an example first). Had them start the “Mi Mascota Ideal” when finished.

    Day 2: Used Mi Mascot Ideal as a Card Talk to warm up. With readings still posted around the room, students completed the Scavenger Hunt. The plans include options for the handout in Spanish or English. I found it was easier for my novices to complete the Spanish version because the words matched, but because they talked to each other in English (“Has anyone seen the one about the bird? Which animal lives in a cage?”), I was able to assess their comprehension.

    Post-lesson: I made a couple copies and stapled them into books and added them to my class library using the covers included in the lesson plans.

    I have many of these activities from Srta Spanish. I like how the students can do most of this without teacher input. The additional vocab on the bottom was great in my intro class as we hadn’t gone over most of it yet. I appreciate that I can make just a few copies and spread them out around the room and have the students go find and read them. This was also helpful in that we don’t cover many pets except for the most common ones and students tend to remember the others and reuse them later in the year. I have not used them digitally as I prefer non tech options with reading / writing.

    I used this as part of a test. Students had to share their favorite animals, read about them from the provided materials, write about them, then read their written work aloud while recording it. All the student-created materials were then posted on a group Padlet so students could see each other’s work. Fun way of conducting a summative assessment.

    My students are loving this resource. It has been helpful to discuss different types of pets, descriptions, as well as likes & dislikes. My only complaint (if I had to have one), is the amount of vocabulary that was included though I knew that this lesson would cover multiple days. The kids are having an amazing time and I can’t wait to hear them talk about their own pets in the target language.
