Movie Talks are one of my absolute favorite activities to give my students comprehensible input! A Movie Talk is definitely fun and engaging, but the students get a TON of practice! These Movie Talks for Daily Routine Unit are great to include in your unit for a clip chat!

What is a Movie Talk?
Movie Talk is a language learning technique developed by Dr. Ashley Hastings. Basically, you play a short, muted video clip while you describe it in comprehensible language for your students.
One of the best parts about a Movie Talk is that you can talk about anything in the visual. This makes it easy to fit a lot of objectives! If you’re not familiar with a Movie Talk, check out my post here for more info on how to get started!

As with anything, make sure you preview the video! You know your school situation and your students best. What is appropriate for one setting and one age group might not work so well for another. Hopefully at least one of these will work for your setting!

More Ways to Use Movie Talks for Daily Routine
If you are already using movie talks for daily routine and want to stretch your content even more, you are in the right place. One easy way to level up your routine unit is to include follow-up activities that build off the Movie Talk without starting from scratch every day. After watching and narrating a clip, try having students retell the story in pairs, using simple present tense and reflexive verbs. This keeps your grammar goals front and center, while giving students lots of low-stress speaking practice.
Another great idea is to create character journals. After watching the video, students “become” the character and write a short entry about their day using the target language. Not only is this fun and creative, but it also encourages students to use vocabulary and structures related to daily routines in a meaningful way.

Interactive Follow-Up Ideas That Stick
Once your students are familiar with the clips, go a step further by creating choice boards. They could act out a character’s routine, create a comic strip, or even film a short scene mimicking the routine in the clip. These options keep engagement high and give students ownership of how they demonstrate understanding.
If you teach multiple levels, Movie Talks for daily routine are an awesome way to differentiate. Use the same video across classes but tweak your questions and follow-ups. Novices can focus on high-frequency verbs and simple structures, while upper levels can discuss cultural differences in routines or use more advanced grammar structures in their responses.
Lastly, remember that your Movie Talks do not need to be standalone. Pair them with reading selections or written summaries to make a complete and rich unit. Students will love the variety and you’ll love how much language practice they’re getting without extra prep.
