Valentine’s Day Themed Shorts for Movie Talks are one of my absolute favorite ways to give students comprehensible input. They’re fun, engaging, and packed with language practice — perfect for adding a little February flair to your lesson plans!

What is a Movie Talk?

Movie Talk is a language learning technique developed by Dr. Ashley Hastings. Basically, you play a short, muted video clip while you describe it in comprehensible language for your students.

One of the best parts about a Movie Talk is that you can talk about pretty much anything in the clip. This makes it easy to fit a lot of objectives! If you’re not familiar with a Movie Talk, check out my post here for more info on how to get started!

As with anything, make sure you preview the video! You know your school situation and your students best. What is appropriate for one setting and one age group might not work so well for another. Hopefully at least one of these will work for your setting!

Walt Disney Short Film : Paperman

I think it could be fun to do the paper airplane translation activity shared by Magister P here! Retell the story as a write & discuss, then play the game.

Sweet and Simple Shorts for Your Valentine’s Day Movie Talk

Let’s be real — February can drag a little, especially if you’re somewhere gray and chilly. That’s why I love tossing in a little Valentine’s fun with a Movie Talk that still packs in plenty of Spanish practice. And the best part? There are so many Valentine’s Day Themed Shorts for Movie Talks that are cute, appropriate, and packed with moments for discussion.

Here are a few short films that I’ve used (and loved) during February:

In a Heartbeat
This one is always a crowd favorite. It’s short, sweet, and has no dialogue, so even novice learners can follow along. It’s about a boy whose heart literally leaps out of his chest when he sees his crush — adorable and totally class-appropriate. I usually use this as one of my go-to Valentine’s Day Themed Shorts for Movie Talks because the visuals are strong, and the emotions are easy to describe in Spanish.

Paperman
Another solid choice. If you haven’t used this Disney short yet, it’s such a fun one to bring into your class. There’s no speaking, but the animation is full of little moments that are perfect for describing. You can keep it simple for level one or use it to dive deeper into storytelling with upper levels.

Amor de Lata
This one leans more on the reflective side, but it’s still one of my favorite Valentine’s Day Themed Shorts for Movie Talks when I’m working with more advanced students. It’s just quirky enough to keep them curious and opens up opportunities to talk about feelings, relationships, and personal connections.

Mixing It Up After the Movie Talk

I like to keep it flexible after we watch. Sometimes we go for a good old comic strip retelling. Other times I have them write a new ending or turn it into a love letter from one character to another. If you’re tight on time, you can just discuss it as a group, asking what students noticed, what surprised them, or what they’d do in the same situation.

Valentine’s Day Movie Talks are such a low-prep way to keep things light, fun, and still full of language. Honestly, I look forward to them just as much as my students do.

Don’t forget to pin this post for later!
