I LOVE this bundle. It was exactly how I wanted to start my year, and I think it has made a world of difference for the students and their confidence levels in Spanish. We’re only in week three, but they’re already speaking Spanish to me and each other – and I truly believe I owe it to this! Thank you so much for this well-made and easy to use resource.

Great resource to mix in with my beginning of the year activities. Students often come back from summer declaring that they remember no Spanish at all, and cognates are a great way to ease them back into it and rebuild confidence.

My students really loved the various activities, and it gave them even more confidence as we were doing this fairly early into the semester, and I look forward to revisiting it.
Sarah N. –
I used this resource with my Spanish classes at my homeschool co-op. I got so much use out of this, and my students really learned from it! I used it primarily with 5th – 7th grade class, but I was also able to adapt it for my 3rd and 4th grade class. This was an excellent resource for the beginning of the year. A great value!
Vivienne D. –
This is such a great resource to do with my Spanish classes. I love the introduction the cognates because it really helps students who are nervous and anxious about learning Spanish, since they are able to relate it to English words. After I did the introduction and practice more with cognates we did the activity where they move around the room looking at these Spanish words again and writing the cognates in English. In 5th grade its nice they get the chance to do an activity that requires them to move around.
Sra Dentlinger –
I used this resource with students in upper levels whose proficiency doesn’t match their peers’ abilities at the beginning of the year. Time saver!
Aranza Itzel E. –
Highly recommend for tutors or online educators. The resource is visually attractive and students find it useful.

Hi Michelle! Were you able to open the Teacher’s Guide with the step by step plan for each day? Please reach out if you had any issues with that – it includes which page to use on which day, with every handout organized under headings that say “Day 1”, “Day 2”, and so on. Just drop me a Q&A or send me an email if you need help!
Sra Melendez –
This is the first time that I use cognates in my classroom and this resource was very helpful. Students were engaged and loved the activities because cognates makes it easier for students to understand the target language. No prep needed, just post it or printed and you are ready to go. The listening activities were okay. It was just a repetition of the text that was previously given to students.
SenoraBlanca –
I always use this resource when teaching cognates. I love this because they realize they can actually read more Spanish than they think. It’s a great way to build their confidence.
Señora Anna –
I loved this beginning of the year unit! I used it with 4th and 5th grade students who’ve had Spanish classes throughout elementary school and who are at a grade-level appropriate reading level (since there is a lot of reading activities). The students loved that they could read and understand whole paragraphs and stories right away. It really increased their confidence going into a new school year. They also enjoyed the sentence matching game and the tócalo game. I loved that it was easy for me to prep, especially since the start of the year is so busy! Since I don’t assign homework at the elementary level, I was able to stretch this unit over 10 classes.
Holly D. –
My Spanish 1 students enjoyed this practice. They loved that they could read a story and understand almost everything after only a few days of class. Thank you.

Lane M. –
I’ve used this bundle twice now with my 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes! The students are engaged each trimester and LOVE how interactive it is. I used elements from the bundle and my own resources during a formal observation with my principal, and he was blown away! I particularly enjoy the smiles on students’ faces when they use cognates as context and can translate the different sentences/paragraphs they didn’t believe they could. It’s amazing to see their confidence grow and love for Spanish! This bundle is definitely worth it, and WILL engage your students. Srta Spanish creates the best resources!

Madame Potter –
This was a lifesaver when out suddenly with covid early in the year. It is hard to find meaningful activities so early in the year that students can do when the sub (or core teachers covering classes) don’t speak the language.
Karen E. –
I’ve read the blogs about teaching a cognate lesson in the beginning of the year but I was afraid to try something different. Not only am I glad I ventured out of my comfort zone, but I am SO happy that I purchased this unit. IT WAS SO EASY to follow. Everything is prepared, from daily presentation slides to paper and digital copies of all the activities. I spent a week on this unit but easily could’ve spent two weeks because there are so many things included in this unit. My students were energized and felt so confident during this unit. They couldn’t believe how many Spanish words they actually knew! I’ve never purchased a unit from Srta Spanish before but after this purchase I plan on buying many more. Made my life MUCH easier.
Marcia Grimm –
Really great resource to start Spanish 1 with.

Gisela G. –
This bundle is great to use in class! I just wish there would have been an option for google slides. I spent a lot of time extracting it from zip and uploading to google slides for more interactive work.
Ashley Mikkelsen –
Hi Gisela! I am confused by your feedback. There are Google Slides for every day of lessons as well as digital versions of every student activity, all premade and linked for you in the download. Was there something else you felt was missing from the lessons? I’d love to hear from you to clarify! Feel free to shoot me an email at ashley@srtaspanish.com. Thanks!

Un poquito de todo –
This was a great way to start off the year. It made the students feel confident in their Spanish skills. This was a great way to kick off our Free Voluntary Reading program. SO many times, the kids will say “But I don’t know how to read Spanish” or “I don’t know Spanish”. This activity helped break down that notion. Our favorite activities were ¡Corre en círculos! and “Tócala”. Gracias.
FCS with MrsEmley –
LOVE LOVE LOVE this bundle! My Spanish 2 students and I used these activities/lessons our first 3 – 90 minute block days as a review and so I could teach them routines and procedures while being in the target language. I used these activities for my first day of classes last year. It was an engaging and fun way to get students on board with learning a new language. They were surprised and proud of themselves when I told them that they read stories all in Spanish with very little help from me
Kristen L. –
5 Stars!
Day 1: I inserted some find-the-cognates exercises into the explicit instruction, and I assigned the word search as independent work (HW if a student didn’t finish during class).
Day 2: Students completed the Mateo Va al Zoologico exercise as the bell-ringer, I inserted some find-the-cognates exercises into the explicit instruction, and students completed the find-the-cognates translation worksheet for independent work (HW if a student didn’t finish during class).
The Scavenger Hunt doesn’t seem very useful in a public school setting, unless you have really well-behaved students.
I haven’t looked at the rest of the materials yet, so I don’t know what else I will use, but before I bought this I was panicked about what to do to teach cognates in a way that would fill enough time, and after purchasing this, I was able to use this for 2 full class periods!
Ashley Mikkelsen –
I’m so glad you were able to personalize the lessons! As far as the scavenger hunt activity goes, I personally have only ever taught in a public school setting and I’ve found it successful with every age group that I’ve taught! 🙂 I hope that in the future you’ll be able to check out the other days of the unit (if you need ’em)!
Ann G. –
I used this resource as a confidence builder in the very first days of school. They were so proud of themselves to understand the material right away… almost like they thought Spanish was easy.. Completely successful, they looked for cognates for the rest of the year, and when they were learning (or forgot) their taught vocabulary, they were less likely to give up. So many textbooks give such a basic lesson, this was fully useable and stayed with them.
John P. –
I especially found the “cognate” material useful for opening my students minds to the number of Spanish words that are similar to their own English vocabulary.
Kennedy S. –
Great resource!
Nicholas A. –
My students loved the different activities. Definitely helped as I was teaching both online and in person.
Michelle Foster –
I purchased one of your bundles. I used the “Corre en Circulos” activity for cognates and for another topic. Great resource and FUN activity. Many students thouroughly enjoyed the format. Directions were easy to follow. It took some students additional ‘live’ assistance to catch on how to move the slides, even with clear directions. I suggest the first time one uses the “Corre en Circulos” you do so when you are available versus with a substitute. But once they understand the format, the students are able to use independently to identify the vocabulary topic. Thanks for time put in to create the slides!!!
Bailey S. –
My students love the scavenger hunt and how great they feel when they are able to look at words and know what they mean because of them being cognates! Thank you!
Maggie A. –
This is a great set of activities to build confidence during the first few weeks of Spanish 1. My students were amazed at how much they could already understand. I’ll continue to use these activities for years to come!
Cassidy R. –
The best way to start out the school year with Spanish 1 and review for Spanish 2!

Samantha Raymond –
This is such an amazing bundle. I use these cognate activities every year. Thank you!
Sarah Fowler –
There is a lot more here than you can use. I plan on using some of the resources I didn’t get to next year with my Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 students at the beginning of the year. I hadn’t ever thought about having a lesson on cognates. They seemed obvious to me, but for students not so much. 🙂
avancemos123 –
There is so much to work with in this bundle.
This material really helped my students build confidence before starting our Spanish 2 content as they realized they know more than they think.
Melinda B. –
This is a wonderful resource to use for teaching cognates in the Spanish classroom. It includes multiple resources that were very interesting and engaging for the students.
Joubethzy R. –
Great activities. My only wish is that there was a PPT version.
Ashley Mikkelsen –
Did you know you can download Google Slides as PPT? File>Download As>PPT.
It might mess with the formatting a tish, but if that’s the program you prefer, that’s the way to make it happen.
I hope that helps!
Amy K. –
I planned to use this resource at the start of 7th grade, but ran out of time with the new schedule and hybrid learning. I definitely plan to use it in the future or as a supplement throughout the year.

Thank you!
Xiomara T. –
Such a good resource! Thank you!
Aileen F. –
I liked that it came with a bonus PPT, which save me a lot of time. I’m using it as filler during our last week of the semester and it is working out very well. I’ve mentioned cognates to my students during other lessons, but now they are understanding more what I was talking about. The lessons fit well for my 45-minute classes.
Erin C. –
Great resource!
MARGARET R. –
I used some of these activities for my first day of classes this year. It was an engaging and fun way to get students on board with learning a new language. They were surprised and proud of themselves when I pointed out that they had read and interpreted stories entirely in Spanish! These activities are very well put together and the directions are easy to follow. Will be purchasing more from Srta Spanish in the future!
La Maestra A –
thank you!!! great product 🙂

This bundle is above and beyond! I started the year with this unit in my 6th grade beginner class and they are off to a fantastic start. I was nervous about how to best accommodate this intro class with all the restrictions of in-school learning while live streaming to students at home. The sequence of this unit is so well thought out and organized. These lessons beautifully eased my students (and me!) into the school year. VERY grateful for the new digital components! It is EXACTLY what I needed in terms of class content and set-up/formatting. My students found their footing in Spanish with cognates, and they learned some useful tech tips from Google Slides and Forms!

These was great for the first week of school! I purchased one license and liked it so much I purchased another for a colleague. We loved giving our students so much CI during the first week, and really just boosting their confidence in Spanish as for many it was their first experience with the language, and during COVID, a pretty intimidating return to school. Great product! Students were engaged and participated. They were really excited about how much they understood. I also LOVED that digital game options were included (Quizlet/Boom Cards). This was my first experience with Boom Cards and they are AMAZING! These particular ones include a great variety of activities including matching, word identification, reading, etc. My students really enjoyed those. My only suggestion would be to dress up the listening recordings a bit. Overall, highly recommended product! Thank you!
Sra Lopez –
This bundle is great for beginners, students start recognizing words and end up reading texts. They feel they can learn the language after this unit. Truly it has open the minds of my students, even the ones that don’t understand why they have to learn a language.
Maria C. –
This bundle is GOLD. It is so well thought out and explained. Thank you for organizing in such a way that it is easy to see and edit teacher resources and easy to assign the student tasks/work. This is a life-saver during distance learning. So glad students have a way to do Corre… activity digitally. Thank you for making this thorough and easy to use as well as effective for student learning.

This is well designed and such a time saver! It was exactly what I was looking for in a cognates lesson. It’s easy enough for my Spanish 1 kids to understand in their first week and help them build confidence, and it’s a good review for Spanish 2 as well.
For the people like me, who always want to know exactly what the bundle is like, it includes step by step lesson plans, which I always appreciate. The slides and forms are editable, so I can customize it for my classes. Almost everything is done for you, which makes this stressful year a little bit easier.

I loved being able to pick and choose since we had already covered many cognates. It helped my non-native-English speakers get some much-needed practice seeing and hearing cognates in a different way than I had imagined so far. It seemed to help them a lot!
