❁Click here to save $$$ on everything you need to teach a unit on COGNATES!❁

You can use this resource in a few different ways! Post the listening files in a secured learning management system (such as Google Classroom) and let students work individually, or you can go through each listening activity as a whole class, playing one file at a time for your students.

INCLUDED:

  • seven listening activities focused on listening for cognates
  • listening files
  • printable student sheet
  • digital student version for use with Google Forms
  • answer keys

Activities 2 & 5, 3 & 6, and 4 & 7 use the same listening selection, but students are asked to do different tasks with the listening. This is purposeful, as the tasks students are asked to complete get slightly more difficult as they progress through the activities. Using the same content allows them to focus on meaning. If you would like, you could do Activities I-IV (page 1) on a different day than Activities V-VII (page 2) so the selections aren’t so fresh in their minds. Up to you, and what you want to accomplish with these practices! *****************************************************************************

  1. Angela S. –

This is a great activity for the first week or second week of classes! It was a time saver!

  2. Papagayo –

Great to have a digital listening activity that my students could do completely on their own. I actually used it for a “remote” snow day but it would also work for a sub day.

  3. Lauren Smith –

I do a mini-unit on cognates at the beginning of Spanish 1, and this was a great tool. The only thing that would have made it better is if it were a native speaker speaking the audio. As a non-native speaker, I can record myself anytime, but prefer to have native-speaker audios when I can.

  4. Jael G. –

This was a create way to incorporate a listening activity for the cognates unit. I liked how the exercised became more challenging as we progressed. First student had to circle words they heard but after they had to complete a short story and answer true or false

  5. Plan español –

Great resource for studying cognates and practicing listening.

This is a good resource to practice cognates and listening.

  20. Cafe Ole –

I love this seller’s resources, but was surprised that this was not a Native or Heritage speaker.

    • Ashley Mikkelsen –

I’m sorry that was a surprise for you! I record all my own audio, or my husband does, and while both of us speak Spanish, neither of us are heritage speakers. I usually try to have a note in my description of a resource to note that it’s just me, just like it always has been in my own classroom! I will be sure to update the description of this listing to make that more clear. Thank you for the feedback!

  21. Sra Madame –

    Perfect for my needs

  22. Nadia C. –

I spent much more time on cognates this year, and it has really paid off! I hadn’t realized how difficult it was for my Spanish students to hear cognates – this activity helped me to not only recognize this challenge, but also to provide additional listening practice for my students. Thank you!

  32. Kristina O –

    great resource

  33. Más Que Español –

This was a great activity to use early on this year, as it helped to build confidence in my Spanish 1 students. It was easy to use, and it was nice to have the online component, as I am teaching hybrid. It worked seamlessly with both my in person and my online students at the same time.

  34. Sra Vallin –

This is a great resource. I used the digital version with my students, and they completed it all on their own at home with the Google Forms and audio files. Overall a fantastic resource. Some of my kids had trouble opening the files, but I think that has to do with their chromebooks more than the files. I will use this next year in class as well. I love that there is both a paper and digital version.

  35. Maria Santos –

I used it as a first week activity to both introduce and review the importance of cognates.
