How to Create Mystery Picture Boom Cards

Anytime I’m trying to learn something new, I head to YouTube! I was in luck and found this video that walked me through each step clearly and made the whole process feel doable even on a busy teacher schedule. I found an image I liked on Pixabay to hide for my students and added it to Google Slides. Then I inserted a table over the image to slowly reveal the pieces like the video shows.

Bring the Fun with Mystery Picture Boom Cards

Looking for a creative way to keep your students locked into vocab practice? Mystery Picture Boom Cards might be just what your Spanish class needs. These are regular Boom Cards with a twist, each correct answer reveals a part of a hidden image underneath. It turns an ordinary review into a little game of discovery, and yes, your students will totally be into it.

I’ve used Mystery Picture Boom Cards during units on animals, school supplies, even emotions, the possibilities are endless. One time, I picked a goofy cartoon llama as the hidden image and you’d have thought it was a treasure hunt. Students were reading, thinking, and clicking away, all while staying in Spanish

In this free set, students click the picture that matches the vocab phrase. Each correct answer reveals a bit more of the picture, turning vocabulary review into a fun little mystery game that keeps them curious and coming back for more. You’ll be surprised how motivated they get just to see what’s hiding underneath, it’s like a mini reward built right into the learning.

You can set up your own sets in a similar manner where the students read a phrase and click the picture, or you could have them choose a matching phrase or word based on what they hear or read. You can even add a little twist by mixing in listening or grammar prompts to match your current unit. It’s flexible enough to use for vocabulary, verb tenses, or thematic units, and students love the instant feedback.

How to Use Mystery Picture Boom Cards in Spanish Class

It’s surprisingly simple to make your own set of Mystery Picture Boom Cards. Just find a fun image, drop it into Google Slides, and layer it with a grid of shapes. Export that to your Boom Cards deck, then build your questions so each correct answer peels away a piece of the grid.
