Valentine’s Day can be a sweet holiday to celebrate! I have a post here where I shared a bunch of Valentine’s Day Activities for Spanish class, but I felt like this activity deserved its own post because it relies on one of my favorite strategies! A Movie Talk is a fun way to get in something seasonal, without taking away from the content you “need” to cover. The beauty of a Movie Talk is that you can talk about pretty much anything in the clip, so you can make it fit a lot of targets! Valentine’s Day Movie Talk

The Plan:

1. Students complete the warm up activity on their computers. You could also do this as a whole group and just discuss along the way!
2.  Movie Talk using Slides – You can easily just play and pause the video to narrate what is happening, but my screen isn’t super responsive. I love using the screenshots because I know the image is going to be right where I want it!
3. Watch the full video, with sound. It’s not even 4 minutes long, but it’s great!
4. Student Re-Write – use the printable comic and let students retell the story in their own words! You could also just project the images.

Creative Twists to Elevate Your Valentine’s Day Movie Talk

Valentine’s Day Movie Talk activities are such a great way to bring seasonal fun into Spanish class without losing sight of your learning goals. Once you’ve walked through the main video and discussion, try extending the activity with a little creative writing. Invite students to imagine a different ending or even create a short scene that could come next. You’d be surprised how many plot twists and unexpected storylines they come up with when they’re the ones in control.

This keeps your Valentine’s Day Movie Talk feeling fresh, encourages language production, and gives students a chance to personalize the content. You can even throw in some sentence starters if you want to offer a little more support, especially for your novice learners.

Add a Little Culture to Your Valentine’s Day Movie Talk

Want to bring in a little cultural flair? Use your Valentine’s Day Movie Talk as a jumping-off point to explore how the holiday is celebrated in different Spanish-speaking countries. From Día del Amor y la Amistad in Colombia to friendship-focused traditions in Mexico, these little cultural notes spark interest and make your lesson even more meaningful.

You can wrap up with a fun comparison activity or have students reflect on how traditions differ, or maybe even write about how they would celebrate Valentine’s Day if they lived in another country. However you approach it, your Valentine’s Day Movie Talk is the perfect setup for meaningful conversation, connection, and language growth.

All of those resources are editable, so of course feel free to edit for your students’ levels. I kept it to really simple language with Spanish 1s in mind, but I think there’s some great opportunity for higher level language – especially when the older man takes an action, thinking it will make him happier…definitely some hypotheticals and what ifs you could get into!
