Present Progressive Boom Cards Digital Task Cards

Play Charades

A simple option for review is to have students play charades or reverse charades! Students draw a card with an infinitive and have to act it out. Their classmates call out what they are doing, using the present progressive.

Reverse charades are played the same way, but instead of one person acting and a group guessing, a group acts and one person guesses. I find that helps my secondary students feel more comfortable!

¡Corre en Círculos! Spanish Review Game

¡Corre en Círculos! is always a hit! Students get up and moving in this scavenger hunt style game. Students read the smaller text on the bottom, write their answer on the worksheet page, then go find the sheet with their answer hung around the room. This self-grading practice is great for review as they find out if they completed it correctly by making it to the end of the loop!

GIF Game

Similar to Charades or Reverse Charades, but instead use slides with gifs or movie clips to have students say what the characters are doing. Set this up as a competition with students in teams, or just have the whole class review and write their answers on mini whiteboards!

For an added bonus, it’s always fun to use actors and characters students are currently into or following. It definitely ups the engagement!

Maze Game

Maze games are a great filler option or addition to stations. Students navigate their way through the maze by choosing the correct path. Then, extend the activity by having students return to the paths they missed and filling in the correct response.

Interactive Present Progressive Activities That Get Students Talking

Sometimes students just need a chance to speak up and move around to really make grammar stick. When you are teaching the present progressive tense in Spanish, it helps to bring in activities that are hands-on and low pressure. One of my favorites is a gallery walk with pictures or real-life classroom objects. Students move around, stop at each station, and write or say what is happening. You can scaffold with a word bank or let them build the sentences on their own. Either way, it keeps the energy up and the learning visible.

Another great option? Mini whiteboard races. Call out a verb and a subject, and let students race to write the correct sentence in the present progressive tense. Not only is it a fast-paced review, but it lets you immediately spot any students who need a quick reteach.

Present Progressive Tense Spanish Activities You Can Reuse

You do not need to reinvent the wheel for every lesson. The best present progressive tense Spanish activities are the ones you can pull out year after year with just a few tweaks. Try setting up a simple card sort—one pile with conjugated forms of estar, and the other with present participles. Students work in pairs or groups to match them correctly and create full sentences. You can easily turn this into a timed challenge or a station rotation.

Another reusable favorite is a drawing dictation. Call out or display actions in the present progressive, and have students sketch the scenes. Then they swap drawings and describe them in Spanish using complete sentences. The laughter and creativity that come out of this are priceless, and your students will be building fluency the whole time.
