Description
Engage your students and incorporate technology easily with this interactive Google Map activity to practice prepositions of location! Students will explore an interactive Google Map of Oaxaca with marked locations such as mercados, Santo Domingo, el Zócalo, a few museos, and more! They will have a document with clues describing the location using words like “next to”, “near”, and more. Students interpret the clues to determine which location is being described. In the second part of the activity, students look at locations on the map and write their own clues to describe the location. Extension activity and answer key included!

Students really enjoyed this to practice their prepositions and locations vocabulary! It was a challenge navigating Google Maps for them…simply because they are not used to doing so, but they really persevered and learned some amazing cultural information!

¡Gracias! Appreciate this and hope to continue incorporating it into my classroom for years to come!

I didn’t have a great experience with this resource. There were at least 5 obvious grammatical errors that I had to fix on the document. It also needs a vocabulary key to help students with target vocabulary that I had to add as well. Finally, I assigned this as a google doc and unfortunately my students could access the map! I had to copy the map to my own version and share it with them.

Hey Katherine!
First I’m so sorry about those errors! You can always shoot me an email or a Q&A and I’m happy to make any necessary corrections ASAP.
I’m also glad you were able to add vocab to support your students. I usually would use this at the very end of our city/directions unit, right before the assessment so my students did not need any additional support and I didn’t want to give them too much right be fore the assessment, so I’m glad you were able to tweak that for them.
As far as the map, there is always the possibility that your district might block it from an outside owner (aka me!). That is why I included the instructions for how to copy the map in the download, and it sounds like it worked great for you to share it with them that way!
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback! Again, please know that you can reach out if you need any support in the future 🙂

This is an awesome resource. My kids loved the challenge! For an extension activity, I had them write clues (using the structure of the clues from this resource) to places on maps that they made of cities they designed. It was a great way to practice prepositions of location, city vocabulary, and incorporate a little culture. Thanks for a great resource!
