Inclusion of both English and Spanish versions makes this accessible to a variety of levels. I used in my 9 week junior high class in English and then in my Spanish 1 class in Spanish. The students stayed focus with the variety of texts and videos about a variety of highlights in Puerto Rico. The resources provided a good overall background of the island before we looked more closely at the music and history of the island.

My students enjoyed learning about Puerto Rico and famous people with Puerto Rican heritage. The activity led to engaging discussions about where Puerto Rico is located, how the United States acquired Puerto Rico, and the current debate about whether the territory should become a state. Several of my bopped along to the song “Almost Like Praying,” and I ended up sharing a link to Genius with additional discussion of the lyrics, pictures, and quotes about the creation of the song. Personally, I love how low prep these virtual field trips are, especially at this point in the school year. I would definitely use this resource again!
