10 Icebreaker Worksheets, Games, & Activities for Spanish Class

If the first day of school is just around the corner or you’re starting with a new group of students soon, ice breakers are a great way to help students get more comfortable with their new classmates! They’re great for practicing social skills, critical thinking, or just a fun activity to add to lesson plans at the start of the year. Icebreaker Worksheets for Spanish Class

Here are some icebreaker worksheets you can use with your middle school and high school Spanish students:

These are low stress icebreaker activities that let students work individually. They can then share their responses by hanging them and taking time to look at each other’s responses, or doing a gallery walk to find specific things – like 5 people they have something in common with!

Social media profiles

These can be used in so many ways, like a book summary project or chapter wrap up, but they’re also great for an all about me project! Students create “posts” on their “profile” to show what’s important to them. Both younger students and high school students enjoy these!

All About Me Posters

Another low stress, individual option is to have students choose and color a poster full of facts about them. You can have them do it in English or Spanish, depending on the level you’re using it with! Students fill out details like their favorite food, favorite color, and more interesting facts as a fun way to introduce themselves without putting anyone on the spot with icebreaker questions. This or That

With a This or That game, students move to show their opinions. You can do this with so many different themes! For a more individual version, use the worksheet instead and have students circle their responses while you play with the Google Slides as a class. Click here to download a set for back to school.

My Summer Break Writing

This is a great option for students to share a bit about what they did over break, and includes tons of differentiation so you can make sure you get the right match for the level you’re working with! In this activity students either write and draw about their break, answer short questions, or write a short response to share about their summer.

Icebreaker Games and Activities

Throughout the first week of school, it’s fun to mix things up with individual activities, small groups, and whole class games. This gives the students time to get to know each other in a variety of settings, and builds that classroom community! Let’s look at some fun icebreaker games and activities for the first days of school:

Conversation Cards

These cards are great for a small group conversation starter option, and they are something that I will do at different points throughout the year, too! Students draw a card and you can have them answer, or you can have each person in the group answer. Download the set of printable and digital conversation cards here!

Human Bingo Games

Sometimes I call these Find Someone Who, sometimes it’s a scavenger hunt, sometimes it’s Human Bingo – it’s all the same game and a great time! This is a fun speaking option that gets students up and moving. Give students a bingo board and have them walk around and find classmates that fit the questions. It can be fun for a warm up at the start of class, or even as a fast finisher to add to your lesson plans. It’s also easy to change the level of difficulty for your students!

The Ball Name Game

This is always a hit and it is SO easy. Students ask a question, toss the ball, another student catches it, answers the question, and the cycle repeats. Honestly, this is the best way to learn everyone’s name in a short time frame!

You can use this with ANY question/answer in Spanish. Let your students frame them, give them a bank, or scaffold it for them on the board! I like to use a medium size squishy ball so we don’t have to worry about coordination and motor skills, but I’ve also seen it played with a beach ball.

4 Corners Game

4 Corners Game with Opinions is great to get students talking. For novices, use this cognates game and they’ll love seeing how many words they can figure out AND share their thoughts about them.

An easy way to change up 4 corners is to make the options based on frequency instead of sharing their opinions. You can do this with free time activities for a great review for your Spanish 2 students!

Circumlocution Games

Games like Catch Phrase, Taboo, and Head’s Up are great games that students can be silly with because it encourages out of the box thinking with circumlocution strategies and often winds up with a lot of laughter! You can scaffold these games for novices by using quizlet (or a different flashcard generator) and I have a blog post to walk through that strategy here.

This or That

While I mentioned This or That as an individual activity, I really prefer to play it like 4 Corners and have students up and moving from side to side of the room to share their opinions, but you can also play with cards in a small group, too!
