No matter your grade level, lesson planning can be a lot. New teachers might especially feel overwhelmed, but as your teaching style changes throughout the years, you might find yourself looking for new ways to organize your lesson plan and unit plans depending on your subject areas or grade levels. Let’s look at a unit plan template for secondary teachers you can use to inspire you this school year!

Unit Plan Template for Secondary Teachers

Free Unit Plan Template for Secondary Teachers

If you’d like a place to start, this template is a free download on TPT. It includes the following components:

  • Standards
  • Title of the unit of study
  • Essential questions
  • Specific goals or targets
  • Skills students will learn
  • Assessment method & evidence
  • Learning activities & strategies

It is editable, so if you need to add more components for your admin, you can! I tend to add the sequence of lessons towards the bottom of my unit plans, even just as a bulleted list.  I’ll put more detailed plans in my slides and only write them out if I’m required to hand them in.

Another option would be to add a space for instructional materials. This isn’t something I would usually add in, however, if it’s a unit where we are going to be doing a project that needs specific materials, I do like to note that on the unit plan.

Finally, I would add how many school day or class periods the unit will take. This makes it easier when you are making your yearly plan to plug in units and know at a glance how long they are!

Unit Planning for Secondary Spanish Teachers

In case you missed it, I do have a blog post where I detail how I like to unit plan for middle school and high school Spanish classes. You can check out those steps for unit planning here!

Of course, unit planning is no good without the day to day, so here’s a few more blog posts I have to help you:

Personally, I tend to use a really simple daily planner to keep my head on straight and jot down things like fire drills and assemblies, but I think working digitally in Google Drive is a great way to link lesson plans year after year and keep yourself organized! This free lesson plan template really helps because it includes a space to link all of the assignments in a unit to help students keep track.

Incorporating Field Trips

While unit planning can be tricky, another piece that can be fun to add are field trips! They can either be the starting point of your planning process, or perhaps you’re in the right place at the right time and find a field trip idea that fits perfectly into a unit you already teach! They are a great way to get students out of the classroom and make the learning process more hands on.

If you need ideas for field trips, make sure you check out my blog post here on ideas for Spanish class! They’re not just for elementary teachers – there’s sure to be something here your students will love!
