Teachers, don’t forget to get the URL cleared by your content filter first! Unfortunately we wasted a whole period because I didn’t know it was blocked. That’s a complaint against my district’s filter, not the lesson plan.
This lesson takes students a full period (57 min for us) to complete well. My Spanish 1 students needed some guidance / translation of the instructions on the main handout, and then I gave the 1/4 sheet as an exit ticket when they showed me their completed map. I gave it in English. It could use some clarification on there such as writing “I would ALSO like to go to…” so they don’t just repeat the same response they wrote before.
The foods selected for the map were really interesting and diverse. I loved the videos included.
Ashley Mikkelsen –
I have done the same thing when I switched districts – whoops! I am glad you were able to get it worked out so you could enjoy the lesson with your students!!
Sarah W. –

Enid C. –
This is a fun and engaging activity to use as an add on to any food unit. Also a great alternative for a sub day. The student like to explore the interactive links to uncover the details. Their biggest surprise is the frog juice in Perú.
Mary T. –
I was looking for a food unit to use with my students — this is a small research project, where they need to look up a food from a few countries and fill in a short worksheet about each food. I needed a vocab list, and some worksheets. I guess I didn’t read the explanation thoroughly. Couldn’t use it.
Ashley Mikkelsen –
Hi Mary,I would recommend taking a third look at it, because I also wouldn’t describe it as a project. Students explore information on the map that is provided for them – there is no research component. Please consider taking a moment to leave updated feedback once you have a chance to use the resource, or removing your review or tweaking the stars to reflect that you didn’t look at the resource prior to purchasing it and haven’t used it with students. It’s a great resource, but it’s not a vocab list or stand alone worksheets, so reviewing it as such doesn’t really feel appropriate.I do have resources for a food unit that are more like what you’re describing. Feel free to drop me a Q&A if you need help locating anything you’re looking for! Thanks,Ashley
Jennifer M. –
The layout was okay but my students were thrown off a little by the map. It’s good in an emergency but needs more instruction.
wanda V. –
Not what I expected, I mean, it’s okay but too expensive
Ashley Mikkelsen –
Hi Wanda! Could you give me more information about what you expected? I always try to be super clear in the images, thumbnails, description, and preview about what you’re getting when you download a resource. I’d really appreciate further feedback about what you were expecting!

Anita C. –
My students loved using this resource for their morning/sub work! They were engaged in the resource and had no trouble getting started once I realized I had to make a copy of the link. It didn’t take much time to prepare this resource, so it was easy for me to use in a time crunch. I adapted it a little bit for my emerging bilingual students, but otherwise it was awesome. This will be a regular resource in my Spanish 1 and 2 classes.
Stephanie H. –
My students were engaged with learning about foods from other cultures, and I used the pdf printout of the book successfully. Unfortunately, the firewall in my school would not allow students to access the map (even with all Google settings configured appropriately). So, I made a separate word document with the name of the dishes for kids to look up. I also instructed students to list some of the main ingredients in each dish in the description part, because some students just had one-word answers for the descriptions.
Tiffany D. –

Kylie Stanfield –
I love the concept of this activity. Food is generally a fun unit and can easily bring culture into the classroom. I liked this from the teacher perspective, but I had many students rush through it and get done as fast as they could. In the future I will probably try to use it differently just to get more engagement. Great resource to have in my collection!
Ashley Mikkelsen –
Something I like to recommend is giving them a chunk of time to explore the map before you give them the handouts. I find it keeps students who just want to get things done and move on more invested in the “discovery” part of the map! Give that a shot next time and see if it makes a difference with your speedsters! 🙂
Theresa F. –

Janna S. –
These maps are fun! My only glitch was some of the videos wouldn’t play for the students because of the blocks set by district (I think)… not your fault! I don’t know why… I didn’t have that problem with the other map I bought from you. I wonder if the new district tech guy changed the settings?! LOL it went great with my SOMOS unit 8 food unit…

Karinna Q. –
This is a perfect resource for those emergency sub days or to use at the beginning of the school year in Spanish class when learning the Spanish basics.
Samantha V. –
This was an excellent way for my 7th grade exploratory students to explore some Hispanic foods on their own. I liked that they could pick what to learn about. Great way to incorporate student exploration, technology, and geography. The only thing I wished could be added is space for them to write a general description of each food. Because if they are just writing the food, the country, and circling their reaction, it is hard to remember what each thing was afterwards or have successful follow-up discussion. That is my only constructive criticism. 🙂
Ashley Mikkelsen –
Oh, good idea! I wanted it to have space for each food and since there are so many I ran out of room, but I could add another version of the handout to give that option! I added that suggestion to my to do list and will try to take care of it the next time I update this file. Thank you for the feedback!
EDITED TO ADD –
Samantha, I’ve added an additional option for students to record as they explore through the map. These are 4/page and include a little more space for students to write a brief description of the foods. You can print as many as you’d like for students to either do every single marker on the map, or to give them some space to choose. I also added options to create a front/back page for them to create a mini book about the foods! Please re-download for the update, and thanks for taking the time to leave feedback.

I love the layout of this resource. The graphics are awesome. And a lot of work went into finding the links for the pictures and videos. But it became difficult to implement due to students not being able to access the format themselves. We had to use as a whole class on my screen, which is okay.

Jannelle P. –
My students loved learning about the different foods. The lines were a little too small for the kids to be able to fit in all the food words, so I had to create an additional sheet for them, since some of the words were longer. Thank you. I learned a lot by using this power point.
Jennifer McClaflin –
Nice, low key way to introduce foods unit. Really likes that I was able to use it with a sub.
Courtney J. –
This was a hit! I used it as a sub plan and kids were engaged and learning. Sub was happy too! It was easy for everyone to figure out and took no planning time. Will definitely use again. I do wish they had to add some ingredients on the chart so I know they really investigated the dish and didn’t just rush through the activity. However, I heard my students discussing the dishes when I got back so I know it was meaningful.
Cordelea F. –
This is a really cool activity. We did this to add some culture to our Spanish 1 unit related to food. Students got to check out different dishes and learn about what people eat in different parts of the Spanish speaking world. I like that it’s got a lot of cultural information but is a very low pressure activity for students. It would work well as a distance learning activity as well.

These resources are engaging and productive as are the other resources from this seller. They have helped me tremendously to get through these months of 100% Distance Learning successfully. They are easy for the students to understand & complete in addition to allowing the students to see their own progress. They provide me with the data and feedback that I need as well as the confidence to know I am doing the best I can for my students in less than desirable circumstances. I cannot say enough positive about them and I hope they continue to create more of the same types of activities. Thanks so much for sharing your time & talents!
