I have used this Semana Santa lesson plan for Spanish class with 6th-12th grade students, in exploratory, Spanish 1, and Spanish 2 classes. I have never tried a virtual field trip with elementary students, but if you teach upper elementary and have students who are very comfortable with technology, you might try it with your upper el ed students. This fit well in a 45-50 minute class period, but if your classes are much longer, I would use this for about half of a block period and plan a follow up lesson, or an additional component beforehand.

Fast Finisher Options for Semana Santa lesson plan for Spanish class

As students finish the virtual field trip at their own pace, it’s nice to have a fast finisher. Check out these options:

Have students write ~10 facts they learned about the celebration on a sheet of paper (or submit in a Google Form). You can use these for Running Dictation later!

Student Choice Projects

After the virtual field trip, give your students a chance to dig a little deeper into something they found interesting. You can have students pick one country and create a short project to highlight the traditions of that place during Semana Santa. Some options I’ve used before:

A mini slideshow with pictures and fun facts
A travel brochure
A short paragraph and illustration
A Canva or paper poster

You can do this as a quick one-day activity, or stretch it into a longer research project depending on your schedule. These always turn out adorable and are great for displaying in the hallway or classroom!

Easy Reflect and Create Activity

Want to keep it simple but still give students a chance to reflect? After they complete the virtual field trip, have students pick one of the traditions they saw and create something small to show what they learned.

Some options:

A journal entry from someone attending Semana Santa
An illustrated postcard describing what they saw
A Top 5 list of things they learned

You can have them share in small groups or walk around the room to see each other’s work. If you’re short on time, make this a fast finisher and let students work on it as they finish the virtual field trip.

These activities are a nice way to slow down and give students space to make connections to culture and traditions. They also make it easy for you to collect a quick formative assessment or just have something colorful to hang on the wall.
