Celebrate Día del Niño with a Cultural Twist
Did you know Día del Niño is celebrated on April 30 in many Spanish-speaking countries? It is the perfect opportunity to introduce your students to a holiday that focuses on children, fun, and cultural appreciation. This is one of those April activities for Spanish class that can be both playful and meaningful. You can incorporate games, songs, short videos, or even mini writing prompts where students reflect on their favorite childhood memories in Spanish. Try assigning partner interviews where students ask each other about their favorite toys, shows, or games from when they were younger — it is lighthearted, personal, and packed with vocabulary practice.
Want to take it up a notch? Have students compare how kids celebrate Día del Niño in Mexico or other countries with how they celebrate birthdays or holidays in their own culture. It is a natural way to bring in cultural comparison and spark meaningful conversations in Spanish. You can even throw in a mini classroom celebration with stickers, coloring pages, or quick games. If you are looking to add more cultural depth to your April activities for Spanish class, this is a great place to start.
Rainy Day Language Fun for April Showers
Let’s be honest. April is also the month of surprise rainstorms and students bouncing off the walls. Instead of trying to power through, lean into the theme with weather-related activities. You can create a quick weather vocab review using movement-based games like “Simon dice” with weather commands or do a gallery walk with weather expressions around the room.
This is also a great time to practice storytelling. Give students rainy-day prompts and have them write or act out silly stories about being caught in a storm, forgetting an umbrella, or inventing a new type of weather. Use drawing, drama, or partner presentations to keep it fun and creative. Adding imaginative weather-based tasks to your April activities for Spanish class not only reviews vocabulary but brings some laughter and spontaneity into your classroom.
