If you are trying to dip your toes into providing comprehensible input for your Spanish students, chances are you are including more reading in your classes! Today I wanted to share some Spanish 1 food vocabulary practice activities for your students, and how you might use it over a few class days.

About the Spanish Food Short Story for Beginners
This PDF download includes a short reading about a girl who is trying to grow a flower written in comprehensible language. The reading includes vocabulary supports at the bottom of the page to help your students be successful.
The story includes:
- high frequency verbs
- weather vocabulary
- food vocabulary
The story is told in the present tense. Perfect for your novice learners!

Spanish 1 Food Vocabulary Practice Activities
Days 1-2: Start by telling the story. Write words or phrases that they may need some more help with on the white board. The word bank on the bottom of the story might give you some ideas! I would also circle a bit as you tell the story. Check out my post here for some tips on how to circle!
Remember to take your time with it and make sure your students understand as you tell the story! At the end of the second day, choose one or two of the activity pages for students to work with. I would recommend the label & color page to encourage students to re-read the story.

Day 3: Go over the activity page(s) you chose with students, and discuss their responses. Next, choose an activity to have your students read out loud. Here are some options and ideas for you!

Volleyball Reading is a great option. Watch the video below for a short overview of this strategy:
After the reading activity, I would have students do another of the comprehension activities from the PDF that you haven’t done yet. If you’d like, the me gusta/no me gusta activity would stretch really well into Card Talk!
If you’re not familiar with Card Talk, check out my walkthrough of this strategy here!
Instead of Card Talk, you could also do a 4 Corners game or a This/That game to have students show their preference with food from your vocabulary list. Both would be a great fit in your lesson.
Day 4: On the next day with this story, having students warm up with the labeling and gustar writing sheet is a calm way to start class.

Next, I would make copies of the student speaking activity from the PDF download. This activity encourages students to ask each others’ opinions of different foods, and record their responses.
After the speaking activity, a great way to review numbers with your Spanish 1 students is to ask them to share about the responses they gathered. Have a class discussion about the food and the opinions of their classmates together. Depending on how vocal your students are in their opinions, this could be a great opportunity to work in some review of gustar in its different forms!

To end class, have students draw on a plate (either one you’ve drawn on a worksheet and made copies of or an actual paper plate!) and write sentences with their opinions of foods in Spanish.
