Day before Winter Break Lesson Plan
The day before break is usually low motivation for everyone. In my opinion, it’s best to go with a day before Winter Break Lesson Plan for Spanish that is really low energy for everyone — not a waste of time, but also not a BIG deal if 50% of your students miss it because they’re already on the road, you know? That leaves us with a few options.
Also, if you teach multiple preps, you can do the same thing with every class, or you can pick a couple of the ideas I’m going to share with you – whatever floats your boat!
Finally, with all of my classes I always do our start of class routine and then our daily routine first – even on the last day of class. You can learn more about those routines here, if you’d like!
Sound good? Let’s chat about some options for your day before break lesson plan!
La Navidad y Día de los Reyes Magos Stations
First up, we have a set of stations. You’ve heard me talk about stations before, and I’ve actually shared a lot more about these stations on my blog in a previous post, so I’m not going to go TOO far in depth. Here’s a quick overview of the stations:
Station 1 – Read a letter to the three kings

Station 2 – El Calendario Readings is a series of short readings related to holiday celebrations and when they take place in the season

Station 3 – Un video corto
Are you familiar with Tío Spanish? The “finger puppet” style of video is juuuust weird enough to captivate students, and the videos have some great, simple explanations! I love to use this video to explain some of the traditions!
Station 4 – Word Search

Station 5 – La Nochevieja y Las Uvas Reading

Station 6 – Write a letter to the three kings

A Cozy and Joyful Finish to Your Semester
If the words “day before break” make you immediately crave fuzzy socks and cocoa, you’re not alone. But let’s be real, teaching on that final day can be wild. Students are excited, schedules are messy, and your energy tank is probably running on empty. That’s where this day before Winter Break Lesson Plan for Spanish swoops in to save the day. It keeps things calm, purposeful, and full of festive vibes.
One of my favorite low-effort wins is turning the classroom into a cozy culture zone. You can dim the lights, play soft Spanish holiday music, and set up some comfy reading or video stations. Students rotate through activities at their own pace, while still staying immersed in holiday traditions and seasonal vocabulary. Even your most distracted learners will find something to connect with.
And yes, pajamas are optional. But highly recommended.

If you missed my previous post with the free download, make sure you check it out here! This is a LITTLE more energy than I personally like for the last day before break, but it’s a good option if you need a plan in a pinch!

Easy Wins That Still Teach
Another hit for my classes? A whole-group La Nochevieja y Las Uvas lesson. Students are always fascinated by this Spanish tradition, and it opens up great conversation about how different cultures celebrate the new year. Pair that with a writing task or a fun class poll, and you’ve got yourself a no-stress yet meaningful activity.
If your students love tech, a quick virtual field trip across Spanish-speaking countries adds global sparkle to your day before Winter Break Lesson Plan for Spanish. Or keep things super simple with a reading and coloring activity focused on Día de los Reyes Magos. This way, students are still getting input, but in a way that feels relaxing and festive.
La Navidad, Nochebuena, Día de los Reyes Magos Reading
This is also a good sub plan if you have a non-Spanish speaking sub! There are several pages of readings and activities for your students to work on.

Instead of doing this as one of the stations, you can do this as a whole class activity! Click here to learn more about this lesson plan.

Virtual Field Trip for Holidays Around the World
You know I love a virtual field trip to introduce students to a whole bunch of culture all at once! While the Navidad, Nochebuena, and Día de los Reyes Magos Reading packet focuses on Spain, this virtual field trip explores several countries around the world!
