Easter Story

If you haven’t taught about Easter celebrations in your classroom before, the calendar might feel a bit confusing. Here’s a bit of background information to help understand the timeline of the story of Easter season:

  • Carnaval or Mardi Gras – This is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the last day of ordinary time before the season of Lent begins
  • Ash Wednesday – This Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten season in the church
  • Lent – a period of 40 days focused on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The goal of this season is to grow closer to God.
  • Palm Sunday – The Sunday before Easter, that begins Holy Week. This remembers Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The palms from the previous Palm Sunday are the source of the ashes used on Ash Wednesday.
  • Holy Thursday – Traditionally this is when the Last Supper is celebrated
  • Good Friday – On Good Friday, we remember Jesus’s crucifixion on the cross and His sacrifice for us
  • Holy Saturday – The Saturday before Easter is a quiet time of prayer and reflection. The Easter Vigil is celebrated on the night of Holy Saturday
  • Easter Sunday – Easter Sunday celebrates the finding of the empty tomb and – most importantly – the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It also begins the Easter season!
  • Pentecost – This celebration takes place 50 days after Easter Sunday and celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit

Hopefully that helps give you some context! Another important piece of information as you’re planning Easter activities in your classroom is to know that Easter is not on a fixed date, rather it changes each year. Unlike Christmas, or the Immaculate Conception, which always fall on the same days, Easter (and the other days listed above) shift.

Let’s look at some Christian Easter printables to teach students about the significance of Easter and traditions around the world!

Las Alfombras de Semana Santa

Learn about Spanish culture through this Spanish reading passage, craft, & Spanish coloring sheets for Holy Week in Spanish-speaking countries. This digital download includes:

  • Google Slides to introduce the lesson
  • Notes for the teacher
  • 1 page reading in Spanish with and without glossary
  • Close reading activity page
  • Comprehension questions in Spanish and English
  • Answer keys for the comprehension questions
  • 5 coloring pages
  • 3 Color, cut, & design pages for a student craft
  • 2 blank templates

Here is the lesson plan outline:

  1. Begin with a short overview through the Google Slides presentation to show them photos and give them an introduction to the alfombras and how they are made. This is a great way to capture kids’ attention and show them the bright, intricate designs!
  2. Then, students read about the tradition. You choose if you prefer the version with or without the glossary for your students! This is a perfect way to use the reading with different levels of your classes.
  3. Next in this lesson plan, check for understanding through a close reading activity and comprehension questions.
  4. Finally, students create their own versions! Choose from the provided coloring pages, have students design their own on a blank template, or use the cut, color, and design version for a multidimensional option!

This lesson plan is great for different ages as you can pick and choose from the different art activities and Christian Easter printables for your favorite activities for different levels.

Spanish Easter Egg Hunts

Your students will love this fun way to “gather” Easter eggs in Spanish class. They’ll practice Spanish school subject vocabulary with this fun “Easter egg hunt” around your school!

Students look at the prompt, then find the answer on an “Easter egg” around the school. When they find the answer, they go to it, and complete the next prompt, repeating until they have completed the circle! Some students like to race to see who can finish the loop fastest, others work at their own pace. Students can begin at any prompt and practice, checking their work as they go.

Download the activity here!

Students see a prompt in an image format – an egg with an image representing a location in the school. Students respond by writing a sentence to describe where the egg is hidden in the school – then they’re off to find it!

Vocabulary Includes:

  • el huevo de Pascua
  • la cafetería
  • la clase de arte
  • la clase de ciencias
  • la clase de español
  • la clase de estudios sociales
  • la clase de inglés
  • la clase de matemáticas
  • la clase de música
  • el gimnasio
  • la oficina

Download the printable pages, hang them around the school, and go! It’s such a fun activity for the Easter season.

If you’re looking for another Easter egg hunt, you might try out a running dictation activity with a twist: put the dictation sentences inside Easter eggs!

Fun Easter Lessons

Another great way to celebrate Easter while including Spanish vocabulary is this prepositions of location activity! Students see a prompt in an image format. Students respond by writing a sentence to describe the image using a preposition and the 1-3 of the Easter themed vocabulary words included! Here is a complete list of the Easter vocab in this activity:

  • la canasta
  • el huevo de Pascua
  • el conejo
  • entre
  • encima de
  • a la derecha
  • a la izquierda
  • delante de
  • detrás de
  • dentro de

This fun scavenger hunt activity has students looking at the location of Easter baskets, Easter eggs, and an Easter bunny (or two!) to determine the correct vocabulary phrase. There is an additional page to print back to back with the answer sheet that includes the phrases in Spanish for you to review vocabulary with your students prior to beginning the activity!

The puzzle includes a printable that’s excellent for getting your students up and moving, as well as a digital variation that is great to assign for absent students or during virtual lessons. Click here to download!

Easter Coloring Pages

These three coloring pages are a great option for Easter printables. Kids of all ages really love to have some time to relax and color! The three different coloring sheets practice different novice skills. There is one color by number, one color by number word, and one color by conjugation for the verb ser.

Virtual Field Trip

This activity includes a mix of printable and digital resources as students explore information on the virtual field trip and complete the comprehension activity on the printable worksheets or digital version. I have used this lesson with 6th-12th grade students, in exploratory, Spanish 1, and Spanish 2 classes.

I have never tried a virtual field trip with elementary students, but if you teach upper elementary and have students who are very comfortable with technology, you might try it with your upper el ed students. This fit well in a 45-50 minute class period, but if your classes are much longer, I would use this for about half of a block period and plan a follow up lesson, or an additional component beforehand.

Check out this lesson plan here!

The digital download includes:

  • Map in Spanish and English
  • Worksheet and Graphic Organizer in Spanish & English
  • Student pages in Google Slides
  • Teacher’s Notes
  • Answer Keys
