Spanish Food Unit Daily Lesson Plans

Here’s a day by day snapshot of the Spanish food unit lesson plans. All of the Slides, handouts, and digital activities can be downloaded here!

Day 1

  • “Buffet” entry to class – students choose food to add to their “plate”
  • Card Talk with the foods on their plate
  • Wrap up with a Write and Discuss

If you’re new to Card Talk, check out my video explaining the strategy here!

Day 2

On day 2, we’ll use the reading created from Day 1’s Write and Discuss for several activities.

Day 3

One of the fun things about food vocabulary is that food elicits some strong opinions from pretty much everyone! We’re going to lean into that today:

Day 4

Now that students have had a good amount of time personalizing the food vocabulary, it’s time to use it in a story! Here’s the plan for day 4 of the Spanish food unit lesson plans:

If you’re new to story telling, definitely check out this blog post for tips and strategies!

Day 5

Let’s lean into the story! We’re going to play a reading game today.

If you don’t want to play the Word Chunk Game, there are tons of reading games you could choose from instead. Check out this list here!

Day 6

It’s time for one of my all time favorite activities for input: a gallery walk. Students will be up, moving around, and reading, reading, reading. They read SO much on gallery walk days, and they don’t even realize it!

This gallery walk includes 28 reading passages!

A simple classroom management tip: any time you do an activity where students will all finish at different points it’s handy to have an independent fast finisher ready to go. In this case, it’s the crossword puzzle, but you could choose almost anything from this list, too!

Click here for tips on how to do a gallery walk!

Day 7

It’s time for a little structured output in the form of a board game! In this game, students will roll a die, move and say the name of the food. You can also scaffold it up or down by having students roll 2 dice, then say a sentence with comer or beber and the item they landed on. Up to you!

Afterwards students will play the scavenger hunt style game, ¡Corre en Círculos!. Just like with the gallery walk, since students will be finishing at different times, it’s helpful to have that fast finisher ready to go with the maze puzzle game!

Day 8

On Day 8 we’ll have some fun with the plate sketch game, before doing some creative writing with a Roll a Story activity!

The plate sketch game is another great source of input for students, and it leads to lots of laughs as students listen and draw on the plate on their heads!

Day 9

We’re getting to the end of the 10 day Spanish food unit lesson plans, so for day 9 we’re going to lean into (surprise!) more reading.

Students love to see what the Roll a Story activities turned out like because their peers are so creative and the stories just get silly.

Day 10

For the last day of the Spanish food unit lesson plans, we’ll do an assessment. Students will listen, write on a food related prompt of their choosing, and interpret a menu.
