Day of the Dead Lesson Plan for Middle School
Why teach Day of the Dead?
Día de los Muertos is one of the most recognizable celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world. Through this Day of the Dead lesson plan, students move beyond common misconceptions and discover the true meaning of this important tradition.
Students learn that Day of the Dead is a celebration of remembrance and family rather than a spooky holiday or “Spanish Halloween”. They explore how families honor loved ones through ofrendas, food, music, and community celebrations.
To complete this lesson, students need access to a device such as a laptop or tablet. They will need access to Google My Maps and the videos are embedded using a Youtube player. If you choose to use the digital interactive activities, those are hosted on Google Slides, or you can print the comprehension activities instead!

This interactive lesson includes:
- interactive map with pictures, short readings, and videos
- printable graphic organizer and comprehension questions
- Google Slides graphic organizer and comprehension questions
- instructions for assigning this digitally in Google Classroom
- answer key for the comprehension questions

Day of the Dead Lesson Plan for Middle School
This Day of the Dead lesson plan for middle school works great with 6th-8th grade students, in exploratory, Spanish 1, and Spanish 2 classes. I have never tried a virtual field trip with elementary students, but if you teach upper elementary and have students who are very comfortable with technology, you might try it with your upper elementary students. This fit well in a 45-50 minute class period, but if your classes are much longer, you might like this plan instead!
