The cold winter months can be really hard to make it through. Whether you’re between Thanksgiving and Winter Break, or in that long period of January and February, sometimes you just ned a low prep lesson to help engage your students and save you time. Grab this free winter speaking activity for Spanish class to enjoy with your students!
All About the Guess Who Game
This game is a very simple one! Students pair up, silently select a character from the game board, and ask each other yes or no questions to identify each other’s chosen character. The first student to guess correctly wins!
In order to play, you just need pairs of students, a game board for each student, and markers to help the students eliminate the characters as they rule them out. Scraps of paper work just fine, or if you use the digital version there are moveable X’s to cover up the squares!
There is a printable vocabulary support page and game board, as well as a digital version for use with Google Slides. Both work well, depending on the supplies you have available!
Extend the Fun with Follow-Up Writing
Once your students have played the game and asked all their yes or no questions, try taking it a step further with a quick writing prompt. Have them choose one of the characters and write five to six sentences in Spanish describing what that character is wearing or what they think their personality might be.
This is an easy way to squeeze in writing practice without it feeling like a full-on assignment. It also reinforces vocabulary in context, especially adjectives and clothing. Want to make it more creative? Ask them to invent a name or backstory for the character. Keep it short, silly, and stress-free.
This works great as an exit ticket or a quick partner share. A little reflection goes a long way.
Use the Game All Winter Long
One of the best things about this free winter speaking activity for Spanish class is that it is so flexible. Yes, it is winter-themed, but you can totally use it throughout the season with small tweaks. Try switching up the vocab list. Add winter sports terms or new clothing words based on what you are teaching that week.
You could even challenge students to create their own version of the game. Have them draw new characters or invent descriptions in Spanish. This turns the activity into a collaborative project that still hits speaking, listening, and writing all at once.
Whether you are snowed in, short on time, or just need something students can dive into without a ton of explaining, this free download is a fun and meaningful way to keep the Spanish going strong.
