These Spanish reading comprehension passages are perfect for free time vocabulary in Spanish 1! This resource includes 14 short passages about kids and their hobbies written in comprehensible language. The readings include Spanish vocabulary supports at the bottom of the page to help your students be successful. The readings are a basic Spanish description of each person’s hobbies and what they like or dislike to do during their free time in the present tense! Students will get lots of repetition of the sentence structure with the verb gustar and hobbies in Spanish.
The short readings are perfect for your Spanish students because it’s not so overwhelming for them. If you put all of the language in one spot it would be a huge packet of info, but the short variety of readings feels very manageable to your middle school and high school Spanish learners.Â
The short text for your learners comes in printable Spanish reading comprehension worksheets in a pdf format as well as a digital version for Google Slides and Boom Cards.Â
Reading Comprehension Exercises
As your students are working with the Spanish language in the short passages, it’s a good idea to work on their comprehension skills! I love doing a scavenger hunt activity with the reading comprehension questions. This way you can get your students up and moving around while they’re doing what is essentially a Spanish worksheet. They are getting lots of input with the Spanish reading passages so you want to do some checks for understanding any new vocabulary and the main idea of the reading passages. There is some vocabulary help on the bottom of each of the short readings, too!
The reading comprehension questions include a question for each of the short passages so they will need to read the selection closely, and go back to the readings various times until they find the correct answer for the different people in the scavenger hunt activity. There is an answer key included for the Spanish and English scavenger hunt activity options!
You could also pull any of the short readings and use them for a close reading activity. The Comprehensible Classroom has a great image you can use with students as they do a close reading activity and annotate the pieces of the different texts.
When they finish the scavenger hunt activity, there is an independent work option that works well as a fast finisher where students work on their writing skills.
Digital Version
There is a digital version of the Spanish reading comprehension passages that includes the reading comprehension exercises, but also some extra practice!
In the extra practice version, students read true and false statements about each of the different people included in the short passages and have to label the true and false statements correctly. You can also have them highlight or underline the text to show where they found it in the short readings as a way to show evidence, a great reading skill.
