The feast of the Immaculate Conception is one of my favorites in the church, but it is easy to be confused about just what we’re celebrating. Teach your students about the Mother of God with these Immaculate Conception coloring page, activities, and lessons as you celebrate this holy day of obligation together with your middle school, high school, or religious education classes!

Information about the Immaculate Conception
If you’re not familiar with this lovely feast day, let me share some basic info to help you with your lesson:
What is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception? This feast day celebrates the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, that is, the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. This special feast day recognizes the dogma in the Catholic Church that teaches us Mary was conceived the the womb of St. Anne. Most importantly, this clarifies that from the moment of her conception, she was free from the stain of original sin. This doctrine reaffirms the words found in the Hail Mary, spoken by the angel Gabriel.
When is the feast day? The feast day falls on December 8th. It is one of the holy days of obligation in the church calendar.
What is a holy day of obligation? Catholic holy days of obligation are the days on which we’re expected to go to Mass to celebrate. This list includes every single Sunday, along with a few additional days. The local conference of bishops may transfer them to a Sunday, depending on when they fall, but in general, these are the holy days celebrated throughout the United States:
- January 1: Solemnity of Mary
- May 29: Ascension of Jesus — Celebrated on the sixth Thursday after Easter Sunday
- August 15: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- November 1: Solemnity of All Saints
- December 8: Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- December 25: Christmas

When did this feast day get added to the liturgical year? Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1854, through the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. It has been celebrated throughout the world since!
How do you celebrate this feast? Celebrations vary across countries and cultures, but candles and music are often included.
Why pray to Mary? First, an important distinction and clarification: Mary is not God! She is the Mother of God, but she is not God. It’s important to clarify that we pray for her intercession – basically, we ask Our Mother to put in a good word for us with her Son. You can pray and ask for her intercession for any of your intentions.
Lesson Plans for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception
When exploring lessons of faith, it’s so wonderful that we are able to share about language and cultural traditions as well. When wishing our Spanish classes a happy feast of the Immaculate Conception, it’s the perfect time to teach about Día de la Velitas. This is a beautiful holiday celebration in Colombia that also kicks off the Christmas season.

This Slides presentation and craft explores Día de las Velitas and its origins in the feast of the Immaculate Conception!

Digital File Includes:
- 39 full color Google Slides (Spanish & English)
- 2 Graphic Organizer Coloring Pages in Spanish & English
- Gallery Walk Activity – Use the slides OR the gallery walk to share the information with your students!
- Cover page to create a mini book for your classroom library

Use the Slides and graphic organizer for a full class lesson or choose the gallery walk version to get students up and out of their seats while they learn! The information included is the same, but it’s a different method of delivery. This is great when you want to choose a more sedentary or mobile option for your students, depending on their needs.

When students finish the lesson component, they create their own candles for Día de las Velitas, or day of the little candles. They can color to show the rays of light coming from the candle, just like the beams of light that illuminate towns and cities throughout Colombia during this celebration.
This comprehensive resource for Día de las Velitas includes a slide show, mini book, handouts, and a craft to wrap up the lesson!

Immaculate Conception Reading and Activities
Another option for teaching about this celebration in Colombia is a comprehensible reading activity! You can use the puzzle for students to read, re-read, and solve the puzzle based on the clues and the code decoder sheet, or you can use the informational reading and comprehension questions for a more traditional class period. If you choose the reading and comprehension questions you can look for a quiet, calm day of independent work, or choose the scavenger hunt version to get students up and out of their seats while they learn! The information is the same, but it’s a different method of delivery.

Digital File Includes:
- Informational Readings
- Comprehension Questions
- Scavenger Hunt Activity
- Answer Keys
- Spanish & English Options
I personally love the scavenger hunt set up because students have to read and re-read the information and they get tons of input!
