Free Spanish Christmas Worksheets for La Navidad Activities
One of my favorite activities to use with Spanish classes from 6th grade to 12th grade is Corre en CÃrculos! Students can play this game as independent work, in a small group, or you can set it up for your whole class to play!
Teacher prep beforehand:
- Print the handouts
- Cut them in half
- Hang the different sheets around the room in random order (I have students do this step!)
Here is how to play this game with your Spanish students before Christmas break:
- Students can start at any page around the room.
- Read a prompt at the bottom of a starting page.
- Record their answer to the prompt.
- Find their answer on the top of a new page.
- Look at the prompt on the bottom of the new page, record their answer, then find the next sheet.
- Continue until they return to the first prompt!
This review game can be done with images, comprehension questions, and different types of questions to promote critical thinking, but for this basic Spanish class the worksheets focus on Christmas vocabulary. In this puzzle, students read the prompt in English, then find the answer in the Spanish version hanging on the wall.
Here is a quick video explaining how to introduce this game to students the first time you use it with them:
While students don’t need anything as complex as a printable graphic organizer to play this game, there is a student answer sheet to copy if you would like! Personally I just have students use a blank sheet of notebook paper when they play. However, some students like to have the instructions right there in front of them as they play the first few times. As their Spanish teacher, you know your class best!
When putting this into a lesson plan, I recommend planning for about 35-40 minutes of my class period. Once they finish the activity, they turn in their answer sheet.
As students finish the scavenger hunt at different times, you might want a fast finisher available. Here are a few additional Christmas and winter holiday activities you might include for students who are done more quickly than others:
- Roll a Story Spanish Christmas Theme
- La Navidad Spanish Board Games
- Spanish Color by Number Christmas Theme
- Spanish Color by Conjugation Worksheets
As I mentioned, Corre en CÃrculos is one of my favorite games to play with students. However, sometimes I like to play it in different ways! Let’s look at some variations for how you can use these free Spanish Christmas worksheets with your students.
Independent Work Activity for La Navidad
Using the mini version of the scavenger hunt that is included means your students can play this as a circle puzzle right on their desks, or on the floor, if they prefer. To play the puzzle independently, students will spread out all the pieces, face up. They will choose one piece from the puzzle. and look at the English or Spanish. Then they will find the matching translation and line the pieces up side by side. This continues until they make a circle.
You can also play this mini puzzle like a race! Students have their own sets of the puzzle or work in pairs and race to be the first to complete it.
One more, similar variation is called “Beat the Clock”. It is like mini race, but the time gets shorter & shorter. Students try to beat the clock and complete the puzzle each time!
Small Group Options for Free Spanish Christmas Worksheets
There are a few ways to use these puzzles in pairs, or a small group. The first is called “The Hands and the Brain” and is exactly what it sounds like! Students will work in pairs and have one puzzle per pair. One student will be seated and they will be the “hands” while the other student will stand and be the “brain”. They work together to solve the puzzle, but the catch is that only the “brain” can tell the “hands” which pieces to put where! Of course, this is a good one for students to swap roles.
The next option to use this free pdf of Spanish Christmas vocabulary is to play a relay race with the cards. Put the cards on a desk or on the floor on one side of the room and all of the students on the other side of the room. Split up students into teams that will stand in line. Each team starts with one card and they race back and forth to gather all the cards and complete the puzzle one at a time, as quickly as they can!
Here is a video with more explanation for these variations, if you would like!
