Movie Talks are one of my absolute favorite activities to give my students comprehensible input! A Movie Talk is definitely fun and engaging, but the students get a TON of practice! These Halloween Themed Shorts for Movie Talks are great to include in October for a little Halloween themed fun!

What is a Movie Talk?
Movie Talk is a language learning technique developed by Dr. Ashley Hastings. Basically, you play a short, muted video clip while you describe it in comprehensible language for your students.
One of the best parts about a Movie Talk is that you can talk about pretty much anything in the clip. This makes it easy to fit a lot of objectives! If you’re not familiar with a Movie Talk, check out my post here for more info on how to get started!
Grab a Halloween freebie!
Before we get into the shorts, I also wanted to share this free short story for you. It’s a fun, Halloween story – but it’s not scary, so you can use it with any of your levels!

Halloween and Spooky Themed Shorts for Movie Talks
As with anything, make sure you preview the video! You know your school situation and your students best. What is appropriate for one setting and one age group might not work so well for another. Hopefully at least one of Halloween Themed Shorts for Movie Talks will work for your setting!

More Halloween Activities
This short reading is a great way to celebrate Halloween in Spanish with your students!
This resource includes a short reading about a girl who wants to celebrate, but has to babysit written in comprehensible language. The reading includes vocabulary supports at the bottom of the page to help your students be successful.
The reading includes:
- multiple repetitions of quiere, le gusta, & tiene (other high frequency verbs as well, but those are the most used!)
- cognates
- Halloween vocabulary
- Recording for students to listen as they read
- Vocabulary support in the form of footnotes
- The reading is mainly written in PRESENT TENSE with footnotes supporting some PRETERITE usage.
Add an Extra Layer with Pre-Watching Activities
Want to get even more out of your Halloween Themed Shorts for Movie Talks? Add a quick pre-watching activity to get students thinking in Spanish before the video even starts. You can show a still image from the short and ask students to predict what’s going to happen. Let them write a few sentences or turn and talk with a partner using phrases they know
Questions like ¿Quién es? ¿Dónde está? ¿Qué va a pasar? work well with novices and can be easily adjusted for different levels. This quick preview gets their minds in Spanish mode and builds curiosity before you hit play. You’ll be surprised at how much more engaged they are once the story begins.
