If you’re in the middle of the interview process, you may be asked back for a second round to teach a demo lesson. A demo lesson is where you come in and teach a short lesson to show off your stuff and your teaching style. Let’s look at some short 10 minute demo lesson ideas for Spanish class!

10 Minute Demo Lesson Ideas for Spanish Class
First, a quick note. While these are 10 minute demo lesson ideas, they could easily be stretched if you’re asked to teach a 20 minute demo, or even longer! They’re also very flexible in the language used, so if you’re not sure what level you’ll be “teaching” you’ll be set with these. Here are some 10 minute demo lesson ideas for Spanish class:
- Teach a specific topic or skill
- Card Talk
- Movie Talk
- Picture Talk
- Weekend Chat
- Música Miércoles
- Persona Especial
Let’s take a closer look at how you can use each of these ideas for an awesome demo lesson!
Teach a Specific Topic or Skill
Sometimes the interview panel has a specific request, such as, “Teach a lesson on likes and dislikes using the verb ‘gustar’.” If that’s the case, I recommend using the search bar on the top of this page. I have tons of blog posts with activity and lesson ideas for a wide variety of topics!
Card Talk Demo Lesson
Card Talk is a great option for a demo lesson because you can really use it for any topic! Students illustrate a paper tent with 3 images about a given topic. Some ideas include:
- likes/dislikes
- foods they prefer
- what they did last weekend
- what they are going to do
- a (school-appropriate) movie or show
Really, anything! This is actually something I talk about in my lesson plan for the first day of school, so if you’d like a demo to see more, I’d recommend checking out this video!
Movie Talk
Just like with Card Talk, Movie Talk is very easy to level up or down, and can be used with pretty much any topic. Choose a short video clip and narrate it in comprehensible language for the students. Check out how to do this strategy here!
I also have several blog posts where I’ve shared round ups of themed videos to help you as you plan your units. Here are those:
- Halloween Themed Shorts for Movie Talks
- School Themed Shorts for Movie Talks
- Valentine’s Day Themed Shorts for Movie Talks
- 12 Clothing Themed Shorts for Movie Talks
- 7 School Themed Shorts for Movie Talks
- 6 Movie Talks for Daily Routine Unit in World Language Class
- 12 Clothing Themed Shorts for Movie Talk for Spanish Class
Along with those themed round ups above, I have several blog posts with free resources you can download and use for a lesson:
Picture Talk
There’s a bit of a theme here: these demo lesson ideas are all easy to scaffold up or down, and you can easily stretch the length! Picture Talk ticks both of those boxes as well. It is very similar to Movie Talk, except you’ll talk about a picture instead of a movie clip! Check out the blog post here to learn more.
Picture Talk is also a great one if you have a specific topic or skill you’ve been asked to teach in your demo lesson. Just find a fun, silly or eye-catching image that relates to the topic. The internet is full of them!
Weekend Chat
Even if your demo lesson isn’t on a Monday or Friday, Weekend Chat is a great option! Simply talk about what they did yesterday or what they are going to do tomorrow. Of course, you can do more things with it, like get students up and moving, or provide more scaffolding as needed. Check out 7 ways to Weekend Chat here!
Música Miércoles
Just like with Weekend Chat, you don’t have to do this activity on a Wednesday! It’s a great fit for any day of the week. However, before planning this for a demo lesson, you’ll want to double check your technology access. This works best with a projector so students can watch the music or lyric video as they listen!
Once again, you can use this with pretty much any topic, and any level. Just choose a catchy song and enjoy!
Persona Especial
A quick word of advice for this idea: I would not recommend it if you’re going to be working with actual students during your demo. However, if you’ve asked some questions in preparation for your demo lesson and you know you’ll be working with adults from the school or interview panel, Special Person Interviews are a great option!
Don’t worry if the person doesn’t speak Spanish – that’s even better! Support them with visual scaffolding and let them shine as your star. Check out this blog post for conducting Special Person Interviews with a guest here.
